Hickman, KY

At the western edge of Kentucky, Hickman sits on the Mississippi River as Fulton County's seat. The river bends around the county's Madrid Bend, giving Hickman a different orientation from inland Kentucky towns: the county's political center is also a river landing with connections across the water to Missouri and Tennessee. European-American settlement came after the Revolutionary era, while Indigenous communities had used this country long before the town took shape. Hickman was founded as Mills' Point in 1834 and became the county seat in 1845.

The Fulton County Public Library's Hickman branch on Moscow Avenue is one of the town's clearest daily institutions, with books, newspapers, internet, and bookmobile service reaching both Fulton and Hickman counties. The Dorena-Hickman Ferry carries vehicles across the Mississippi between Kentucky and Missouri, and the Hickman-Fulton County Riverport handles agricultural and industrial cargo farther downriver. Hickman's local clue is the overlap of county government, library service, ferry traffic, and Mississippi geography: a small Kentucky city whose map opens outward along the river.
