About Hickman

Hickman is an unincorporated Smith County community in northern Tennessee, identified by ZIP Code 38567. Its daily map runs through rural roads, farms, creeks, and the larger county centers around Carthage and Gordonsville. Without an incorporated town government, many civic routines pass through Smith County offices and the county school system. The place is small enough that a post office address and a cluster of homes do much of the work a downtown would do elsewhere.

Hickman's school history gives the community a stronger outline. An earlier Hickman schoolhouse stood between Hickman and Sykes, with Tennessee Central Railroad tracks running around its playgrounds; a later school was built closer to Hickman. Local records even remember a brief attempt to use the old building for a soap-powder factory. Today, students follow county school routes, while the community's identity remains tied to the old school ground, the railroad corridor, and the roads through Smith County. Hickman is a small Tennessee place whose history survives in practical landmarks.
