Hickory, PA

Hickory is a Washington County CDP in Mount Pleasant Township, with roots that reach back to the township’s first land claims. In 1788, Matthew Hillis received a 236-acre tract about a mile east of present-day Hickory and called it Mount Pleasant. The village has also gone by Hickory Tavern and sits in a landscape shaped by Chartiers, Raccoon, and Cross Creeks. Today Hickory is part of the Fort Cherry School District, but the older map still shows through in the surrounding roads and farms. It is a small southwestern Pennsylvania place-name with two identities—the township’s Mount Pleasant origin and the village name people kept using.
