Hobbs sits out on the flat high plains of southeastern New Mexico, right on the doorstep of the Texas border. With around 40,000 residents, it serves as the commercial hub for Lea County and the busy Permian Basin oil patch. The landscape is open and sun-drenched, with steady prairie breezes and pump jacks dotting the horizon. Getting around is straightforward thanks to highways like US-62, US-180, and the Lovington Highway connecting residential pockets to shops, schools, and workplaces. That rapid growth led three separate settlements to merge into the single city of Hobbs in 1937. During World War II, the military built a major bomber training base on the northwest edge of town, which later evolved into the city's industrial airpark. That airfield also led to an unexpected claim to fame: world-class soaring. Thanks to powerful desert thermal updrafts, Hobbs became an international gliding destination and remains the long-time headquarters for the Soaring Society of America.
