Holbrook, NY

Long Island MacArthur Airport sits immediately west of Holbrook, a Suffolk County hamlet and census-designated place divided between the towns of Brookhaven and Islip. The 2020 census recorded 26,487 residents. Much of the area once belonged to the 51,000-acre Islip Grange estate acquired by William Nicoll in 1697. Alexander McCotter bought 5,000 acres and platted the community in 1848, when it was still largely rural. St. John's Lutheran Church, built in 1863, is the oldest surviving building from that period; a cigar factory later operated beside the original Long Island Rail Road station in 1875. At 150 Holbrook Road, Sachem Public Library gives the hamlet a multi-use public space.

The library opened its Holbrook building in 1966 and has since expanded it twice. Its Studio takes appointments for 3D printing, laser engraving, poster printing, Cricut projects, recording, and several forms of media scanning. Directly across from the entrance, the Inside/Out garden remains open year-round when weather permits, with a large performance area and smaller spaces for story hours and walking. The town-run Holbrook Country Club broadens the recreation mix beyond golf: its 18-hole course and driving range share the property with soccer, baseball, and softball fields, a playground, and basketball, tennis, and handball courts.
