Holland Patent, NY

Holland Patent is a village in Oneida County at the junction of Routes 274, 291, and 365. Gerrit Boon established the settlement in 1797 as an agent for the Holland Land Company, whose land grant gave the village its name. The crossroads location helped the community grow as farms and roads spread through western Trenton, and it still makes Holland Patent easy to place on a map.

The village's signature landmark is the Holland Patent Stone Churches Historic District, a group of six churches gathered around the public square. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, preserving a remarkably concentrated piece of local religious and architectural history. Holland Patent Central School District gives the village another institution that reaches into the surrounding countryside. Put together, the routes, square, churches, and school tell a compact story: an old land-company settlement that became a village with a strong civic center, where historic buildings and current school life share the same few blocks. The result feels rooted in the Mohawk Valley's small-town road network without losing its own distinct name and layout.
