About Homer

Homer is a Champaign County village with Homer Lake just six miles south, and that lake is more than a recreation stop. The 814-acre Homer Lake Forest Preserve holds traces of the old town of Homer Park, the amusement park that once used the Illinois Traction System interurban line. Today the preserve’s water, woods, and wildlife give Homer a substantial outdoor edge; the village’s own recreation list also includes parks with playgrounds, water features, and a train caboose.

Back in town, Heritage Community Unit School District 8 serves local students, and the Heritage Hawks give the village a shared school identity. The community library, historical society, youth league, and sports commission fill out the everyday map. But the best local story is still the old park under the preserve: an interurban line once brought people out for parties, and the lake now covers the traces of that earlier amusement landscape. Homer is a small village with a layered south side—lake, forest preserve, old park, and the Salt Fork River country around it.
