About Homewood

Homewood is a southeastern Jefferson County city in the Birmingham metropolitan area, directly south of central Birmingham across Red Mountain. The 2020 census counted 26,414 residents. Shades Creek, part of the Cahaba River system, runs through the city. Early development was marketed to Birmingham residents with the slogan “Out of the Smoke Zone, Into the Ozone,” and Tudor architecture already common over the mountain influenced local building. Homewood annexed Oak Grove in 1955. The Hollywood Historic District entered the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and includes houses recognized by the American Institute of Architects.
