Honaunau-Napoopoo, HI

Honaunau-Napoopoo is a South Kona CDP on Hawaii Island, where the road from the Kona coast climbs through lava fields, coffee country, and older settlement areas. The place name carries two nearby communities together, and the surrounding map is read through Kealakekua Bay, Honaunau Bay, and the South Kona shore. Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park gives the area its best-known landmark, but the park sits within a much older cultural landscape that continues inland through farms and small roads.

The park preserves a puuhonua, or place of refuge, enclosed by a 965-foot Great Wall, along with royal grounds, the Hale o Keawe temple site, Kiilae Village, and a coastal trail. Those sites hold centuries of Hawaiian history in one 420-acre park. Honaunau-Napoopoo's everyday rhythm stays more spread out: Route 160, the shore, family land, and the farms that climb toward Mauna Loa. It is a place where a powerful historic shoreline and ordinary South Kona routines sit close together.
