Honcut, CA

Honcut is reached by Lower Honcut Road from State Route 70, near the Butte-Yuba county line and the creek that gives the place its name. The modern highway is a regional working corridor: the 2023 SR-70 project added a new Honcut Creek bridge at the county line, and Caltrans describes this stretch as a link for commuters and commercial freight between Oroville, Chico, and the Sacramento region. The older map followed a different kind of traffic. Honcut, also known as Moore's Station, stood along the Northern California Railway route, and the railroad carried agricultural products from the surrounding valley and foothills.

The post office opened in 1856, moved between Butte and Yuba counties, and closed in 1943. Moore's Station had its own post-office runs from 1869 to 1892. A 1914 bridge over South Honcut Creek, documented by the Historic American Engineering Record, linked the road network through rural farmsteads and cattle fields. Honcut Elementary is listed as an active K-3 public school in the 2025 state directory, at 68 School Street in Oroville, and the community's students continue into the Palermo Union Elementary and Oroville Union High School systems. Honcut's local story is a crossing point: rail, highway, creek, and school routes all pull the small settlement toward the counties around it.
