Honokaa, HI

Honokaa is a Hamakua CDP on Hawaii Island, set on the plateau above the Hamakua Coast where Route 19 meets Route 240. Mamane Street is the main local spine, lined with storefronts, old plantation buildings, and community institutions. Honokaa Sugar Plantation began in 1876, Honokaa Sugar Company was chartered in 1878, and the Hamakua sugar era shaped the town until the last district plantation closed in 1994.

Honokaa Heritage Center, Honokaa People's Theatre, the Hongwanji Mission, and the old commercial blocks keep that plantation-era town legible. Route 240 heads toward Waipio Valley Lookout, while Route 19 links Honokaa with Waimea and Hilo. Today the town carries a mix of ranching, farming, small shops, schools, and cultural events. The weekly rhythm runs through the theater, school grounds, old shops, and community gatherings. That blend gives the town a lived-in feel beyond its preserved storefronts. Honokaa feels like one of those places where the main street still remembers the industry that built it, even after the fields changed.
