About Hoonah

Hoonah is a largely Tlingit first-class city on Chichagof Island, west of Juneau across Icy Strait. The Huna Tlingit homeland includes Glacier Bay and the waters around Icy Strait; advancing glaciers forced people from the bay, and a permanent settlement was established farther south in 1754. Hoonah's post office made the spelling official in 1901, while the city still faces Port Frederick. A Presbyterian school opened in 1881. The 1912 Hoonah Packing Company cannery site now operates as Icy Strait Point, beside a working fishing economy that still ships salmon, crab, black cod, and halibut. Hoonah is an Alaska city where Indigenous homeland, port, school, fishing, and tourism meet.
