Hooper Bay, AK

Hooper Bay sits right along the Bering Sea in western Alaska, surrounded by windswept tundra and coastal lagoons. It is one of the larger Yup'ik villages in the region, known for its deep cultural roots and friendly community. The local school, Naparyarmiut Elicarviat, serves kids from preschool through high school and acts as a major gathering place, with Yup'ik language immersion woven into the early grades.

Because Hooper Bay is completely off the road system, getting in and out means hopping on a small plane. Around town and across the delta, residents rely on boats, four-wheelers, and snowmobiles to travel and haul supplies. Daily life follows the seasons, with families heading out to fish for salmon, hunt, and pick berries on the tundra. Moving here requires adjusting to unpredictable coastal weather and remote flight schedules, but newcomers are met with a resilient, close-knit village.
