Hopland, CA

Tucked into Mendocino County's Sanel Valley along the Russian River, Hopland is a small, easygoing wine country community with fewer than a thousand residents. Located right along Highway 101, it sits about 15 minutes south of Ukiah and roughly two hours north of the San Francisco Bay Area. Rolling vineyards, golden foothill pastures, and a walkable village center give the area a distinctly quiet, rural character.

The heart of town features local tasting rooms, cozy cafes, and the beautifully restored 19th-century Thatcher Hotel. Nearby, the University of California’s Hopland Research and Extension Center hosts workshops and nature walks across thousands of acres of preserved oak woodland, while the Hopland Band of Pomo Indians remains an integral part of the local community. For everyday shopping, hospital care, and broader services, residents typically make the quick drive up to Ukiah or head south into Sonoma County.
