Horatio, AR

Horatio is a city in Sevier County, in southwest Arkansas near the county’s farm and timber country. It was founded in 1895 and had 920 residents in the 2020 census. The city’s history also carries a hard truth: for several years after its founding, and at least through 1905, Horatio operated as a sundown town that barred African Americans from living there. That record matters when the town’s past is discussed; it is part of the place’s history, not a footnote to it.

Today, the everyday municipal work is straightforward and visible. Horatio’s city channels handle water bills, local-government information, youth sports, and critical-weather alerts, while Sevier County provides broader law-enforcement and county services. Agriculture, forestry, and small-scale manufacturing still shape the regional economy, and De Queen is the nearest larger center for errands and county business. The result is a town with a clear civic core and a rural setting, where school calendars, ball fields, utility notices, and highway trips set the weekly rhythm.
