About Horseshoe Bend

Horseshoe Bend sits at the Payette River’s big U-turn, a bend that shaped the Idaho city’s name and its early purpose. During the 1862 Boise Basin gold rush, miners used the spot as a winter staging area while snow blocked the routes ahead; for a short stretch it was also called Warrinersville after a sawmill operator. Once the rush cooled, ranching and logging kept the town going. Today Highway 55 carries the Payette River Scenic Byway through the area, while the river still supplies the defining piece of geography. Horseshoe Bend is an Idaho foothill town where a river bend, a gold-rush pause, and working-country history all meet.
