Horton Bay, MI

Horton Bay sits in Bay Township on the northeastern shore of Lake Charlevoix, with Pine Lake and the larger lake giving the community its shape. Samuel Horton settled here in 1876, when lumbering supplied the first economic reason for a cluster of homes and work. The post office opened as Horton’s Bay on February 27, 1879, with Alonzo Stroud as its first postmaster. That small postal beginning helped fix the name on maps even as the surrounding timber country changed.

Today the community is a mix of year-round homes, seasonal properties, wooded roads, lake access, and the farms and open land of northern Charlevoix County. Boyne City Public Schools serves Horton Bay, and Boyne City handles many larger errands, jobs, and services to the southeast. Life here follows the lake through summer boating and shoreline time, then turns toward roads, weather, and township routines as the seasons shift. Horton Bay still feels tied to the water and to the older working landscape that came before the vacation cottages.
