Hot Springs, SD

Located along the southern edge of South Dakota's Black Hills, Hot Springs is a picturesque town of around 3,500 residents known for its naturally warm waters and historic red sandstone downtown. Lakota and Cheyenne tribes originally gathered around these thermal springs, and by the late 1800s, visitors were arriving from across the country to stay in local bathhouses and health resorts. Today, that wellness heritage remains a defining feature of the community, and the sheltered canyon setting gives the town a milder year-round climate than much of western South Dakota.

Day-to-day life here is quiet and community-centered, with local public schools, neighborhood parks, and a major VA medical center anchoring the area. Notable spots like the Mammoth Site and Evans Plunge bring steady seasonal visitors, but the pace stays relaxed for residents. U.S. Highway 18 provides a direct route south toward Nebraska and connects north toward Rapid City for airport access, major retail, and specialized healthcare, while Wind Cave National Park and Angostura Reservoir sit right nearby for hiking, camping, and boating.
