Hotchkiss, CO

Hotchkiss is a Delta County statutory town of 875 people at the 2020 census, on the north side of the North Fork Gunnison River. Enos T. Hotchkiss settled the townsite in the early 1880s; the post office dates to 1882 and incorporation followed in 1900. Irrigation water from the river helped turn the valley into cattle country, then orchard and farm country. State Highway 92 runs through Bridge Street toward Delta and the wider North Fork Valley.

Hotchkiss works as a service and supply hub for the surrounding mesas, with grocery, hardware, medical, restaurant, government, and repair businesses gathered in a town of fewer than 1,000. The town has K-8 schools and North Fork Valley High School, while the nearby Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery adds another recognizable stop. Coal mining shaped the valley for more than a century, but today's local mix also includes orchards, vineyards, hops, ranches, farms, and food businesses. Hotchkiss is the practical middle point between Crawford, Paonia, and Delta, with the river valley doing the connective work.
