About Houston
Houston is the Texas County seat in central Missouri’s Ozarks, at the meeting of U.S. 63 and Missouri 17. The town was incorporated on June 29, 1857, and took its name from Sam Houston; postal service followed the next January. Civil War damage wiped out the town, but it was rebuilt afterward. The county-seat story still shows up in the Ranger Station Historic District, Cole House, and the old Houston High School, all listed on the National Register. If you’re orienting yourself, think county-seat role, Ozark highways, and a handful of buildings that carry Houston’s nineteenth-century chapters.
