Houston, PA

Houston is a Washington County borough whose story starts with Daniel Houston’s 1827 purchase of land from John Haft. Houston was a relative of General Sam Houston, and his son David C. later saw a town in the area after the Chartiers Valley Railroad arrived in 1871. The first houses of Houstonville followed that railroad, along with a neighboring plan called Riggletown; the borough incorporated in 1901 from parts of Chartiers and North Strabane townships. Chartiers Creek, Chartiers Run, and Plum Run run through the borough, which sits within the Chartiers-Houston school district. Houston is a southwestern Pennsylvania borough with a family name, a railroad beginning, and three waterways in its local roll call.
