Howland, ME

Howland's census-designated place is the named river-side settlement within the larger Town of Howland in Penobscot County. The Piscataquis and Penobscot Rivers meet here, and Interstate 95 puts the community about thirty minutes north of Bangor. The river point has long shaped the town's practical history: a 1901 schoolhouse stood between the rivers, while a dam and pulp-and-paper work later tied the Penobscot shore to industry.

Today, Howland is read through those same crossings. One new bridge spans the Piscataquis and another is under construction across the Penobscot, with wide sidewalks planned for people, ATVs, and snowmobilers. The former tannery site has also gone through cleanup, leaving the riverfront with a different next chapter.
