Hoxie, KS

Hoxie is the Sheridan County seat in western Kansas, on the local route network around Highway 23. The 2020 census counted 1,211 residents. Hoxie USD 412 includes Hoxie Elementary and Hoxie Junior-Senior High School, so the courthouse and schools sit at the center of a county built around agriculture and long road trips. The town’s position north of I-70 keeps it tied to larger regional routes while its daily map remains prairie roads, school traffic, and county offices.

Hoxie was laid out in early 1886 after its founders persuaded residents of Kenneth, three miles north, to move to the new site. A railroad line was expected through Hoxie, and the two communities agreed to consolidate, making Hoxie the county seat. That origin still gives the town a clear local story: a planned move, a county courthouse, and a school system serving the surrounding farms. Hoxie is the kind of Kansas county seat where town government and open country meet at the same crossroads.
