Hubbard, IA

Hubbard is a Hardin County city in south-central Iowa, laid out in 1880 when the Chicago and North Western Railway extended through the area. The city was named for Judge Nathaniel M. Hubbard, a railroad attorney, and incorporated on November 1, 1881. Its location just east of U.S. Highway 65 and Iowa Highway 175 keeps the old rail town connected to the larger county road map. Around the streets, farm ground and town blocks meet in the same flat central Iowa landscape.

The Hubbard-Radcliffe Community School District ties Hubbard to nearby Radcliffe and South Hardin schools. The town park, dedicated in 1935, gives the city a long-running gathering place, while the Hubbard Public Library was completed in 2011. Those institutions sit alongside the older railroad logic: a compact center, highways carrying traffic around it, and agricultural land stretching beyond the city limits. Hubbard's local story is straightforward and durable, built from a rail line, a name borrowed from a railroad lawyer, and the civic places that grew after the tracks arrived.
