Hudson Lake, IN

At the 2020 census, Hudson Lake was a LaPorte County census-designated place of 1,226 built around the natural lake that gives it its name. The community was first called Lakeport and had a cluster of cabins and shops by the 1830s, when the lakeshore served as a stagecoach stop between Chicago and Detroit. Today most homes sit north and east of the water, while Lake Park occupies the south side and the South Shore rail line runs along the southern shore.

Hudson Lake’s modern story is as much about managing water as enjoying it. The lake sits on a continental divide: water on one side moves toward Lake Michigan, while the other side drains toward the Kankakee River. After a drought reduced the lake’s surface area by about 40 percent, residents formed the Hudson Lake Conservation Association and worked with Indiana DNR on access, invasive plants, water levels, and a boat launch. New Prairie United School Corporation serves local students, and the South Shore stop links the community to South Bend and Michigan City. Hudson Lake is a place where a train timetable, a watershed map, and a lakeside neighborhood all describe the same address.
