Humboldt, SD

Humboldt is a Minnehaha County city about 20 miles west of Sioux Falls. The 2020 census counted 579 residents. Interstate 90’s Exit 379 puts the town on the east-west travel map, while Lost Lake lies two miles north and Beaver Lake one mile east. Those lakes, the interstate, local streets, and surrounding cropland give Humboldt a compact setting with a clear connection to the Sioux Falls area. The town is a local stop in the prairie countryside, with larger employment and services tied to the metro nearby.

Settlement began at Humboldt in 1877, and the town took its name from Humboldt Township. The place grew in the era when prairie communities were organized around post offices, rail lines, schools, and farm trade; I-90 now carries the regional travel that older routes once handled. Exit 379 is also noted as a midpoint on the country’s longest interstate. Humboldt’s local map stays straightforward: homes and businesses between two lakes, farm roads reaching out in every direction, and a major highway just beyond town.
