Huntington Station, NY

Huntington Station came to life in the late 1800s when the Long Island Rail Road laid tracks a couple of miles south of Huntington's historic harbor village. Businesses quickly popped up around the depot to serve travelers, turning the area into its own distinct hub. The charming brick station built in 1909 still anchors the neighborhood today, giving commuters a straight shot into Manhattan on the Port Jefferson Branch. Moving outward from the tracks, the commercial strip gives way to quiet, established residential blocks filled with single-family homes, colonials, and ranches that make up the heart of the hamlet.

Route 110, locally known as New York Avenue, runs right through the center and serves as the main north-south spine. If you are looking at homes here, keep in mind that the hamlet spans across multiple school districts, primarily South Huntington along with parts of Huntington and Harborfields. Day-to-day shopping shifts as you travel down the avenue. Right around the train station, you will find independent bakeries, delis, and local service shops, while heading a few minutes south brings you to the Walt Whitman Shops, an upscale indoor mall surrounded by major retailers and popular restaurants.

The area around the train station is seeing steady investment, with ongoing downtown revitalization projects bringing new mixed-use buildings, upgraded sidewalks, and modernized infrastructure along New York Avenue. While roadwork can occasionally slow down local traffic, these upgrades are steadily making the core area more pedestrian-friendly. History buffs can tour the Walt Whitman Birthplace, a preserved 19th-century farmhouse tucked just off the main road, while families frequently head to Manor Field Park for its playground, athletic fields, and summer spray park. The neighborhood library branch on New York Avenue hosts regular community events, storytimes, and study spaces. Combined with an incredible variety of authentic Latin American eateries and quick access to Huntington Village's nightlife just up the road, the hamlet offers a practical, well-connected suburban base.
