About Hurricane

Sand Hollow Reservoir and the dry channel of the Hurricane Canal show two eras of water in Hurricane. The canal, completed in 1904 and empty since 1985, made farming possible for a settlement long associated with peaches, apricots, pecans, and pistachios. A trail follows part of the old waterway, and the 2026 Peach Days schedule builds canal treks into a Labor Day week of home and farm displays, a parade, rodeos, live performances, a peach cook-off, a movie in the park, and a pickleball tournament. At the city's southern side, Sand Hollow State Park puts boating, fishing, diving, beach camping, and off-highway-vehicle access into a red-sandstone setting. North of town, Quail Creek State Park's 600-acre reservoir supports boating, fishing, paddling, and camping through the mild winter season. Hurricane is also managing unusually fast growth.

New recreation facilities make that expansion visible. The city opened the four-court Storm Courts complex in March 2026 for basketball, volleyball, pickleball, tournaments, programs, and rentals. The old municipal pool has been removed, and a $16 million year-round aquatic center with competition lanes, a slide, play features, and a lazy river is under construction with a target completion in June 2028. The Community Center grounds retain a splash pad, pavilion, playground, and picnic areas. On State Street, the Hurricane Pioneer Museum occupies a pink sandstone building completed in 1940 by Works Progress Administration labor. The building that once held the library and city offices now presents the canal, household, and agricultural history that preceded today's reservoir recreation and rapid building cycle.
