About Hurt

Hurt is a Pittsylvania County town named for John L. Hurt Jr., the attorney and landowner whose bequest supplied the land for the municipality. It incorporated in 1967, and U.S. 29's business route is the main line through town, linking Hurt to the larger Danville area and nearby Altavista. The local history has two distinct landmarks: Locust Hill, tied to the Hurt family, and Hill Grove School, a historic school for Black children. The town's 2017 semicentennial included a time capsule opened at Town Hall, though water damage had gotten to much of what was inside. Hurt is a small Virginia town with a name, a highway, and a few places carrying the older story forward.
