Hyde, PA

Hyde is an unincorporated community and census-designated place on the northwestern side of the West Branch Susquehanna River in Clearfield County. It sits on the southwestern side of Clearfield, the county seat, so the community’s map is closely connected to the larger borough’s courthouse, businesses, and riverfront. The 2020 census counted 1,303 residents. Clearfield County grew through lumber, coal, farming, and river transport, and Hyde belongs to that same valley system.

Hyde’s setting makes the river the clearest landmark. The surrounding valley developed around bridges, railroad lines, coal mining, and timber moving through the West Branch corridor, while the Hyde Bridge area remains part of the local river landscape. The Hyde Bridge area also marks trout water and old bridge crossings along the river. Roads into Clearfield and nearby communities carry that older industrial geography forward. Hyde has no separate borough government or downtown civic center; its character is tied to the river, the county seat beside it, and the working history of central Pennsylvania’s wooded valleys.
