Hymera, IN

Hymera is a Sullivan County town and the main community of Jackson Township, set in the coal-country landscape west of Terre Haute. Its early geography followed Busseron Creek, where a grist mill operated around 1829, and its first churches and homes grew around Methodist settlement. A small log building once served as a place of worship before the town’s streets and business blocks took shape. Mining, church life, and rail connections brought businesses to the town’s early blocks.

Hymera was platted about 1870 by Nathan Hinkle, and coal mines and a rail branch later drove its growth. The post office has operated under the name Hymera since 1855, after an earlier Pittsburg name was rejected; the town adopted Hymera formally in 1890 and incorporated in 1902. Shakamak State Park and Minnehaha Fish and Wildlife Area are nearby outdoor destinations, while Northeast East Elementary and North Central High School serve students. Hymera carries both a mining history and a landscape of creeks, fields, and state recreation.
