About Icard
Icard is a Burke County census-designated place in the Catawba Valley, east of Morganton and beside the town of Hildebran. The 2020 census counted 2,452 residents. It sits in the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton metropolitan area, but the local landscape is still a mix of farms, wooded hills, and roads threading between small communities. Burke County treats Icard as one of its named townships and populated places, which is a good clue to how the area works: it is a recognizable community without a separate municipal government.
The Icard name comes from an early Burke County family, and the settlement grew through the valley combination of agriculture, churches, schools, and small trade. Today Burke County Public Schools serve the area, while Hildebran and the larger Catawba Valley supply nearby services and connections. The Blue Ridge region is close enough to shape the views and weather, even though Icard sits on the lower valley side. Icard is the kind of place whose character lives in the surrounding county map: farmland, hardwoods, school buses, and neighbors separated by roads more than by town limits.
