Idaho City, ID

Located about 36 miles northeast of Boise along the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway, Idaho City is a historic mountain town with roughly 500 residents. The community was founded in 1862 during the Boise Basin gold rush, quickly swelling into a bustling frontier boomtown that briefly outgrew Portland. When the initial mining frenzy subsided, Idaho City held onto its role as the Boise County seat, establishing an administrative center that helped the town endure as other nearby mining camps faded away.

Today, the town's frontier heritage remains front and center. Walking down the main streets reveals wooden boardwalks, weathered brick storefronts, and historic landmarks like the old county courthouse and Boot Hill Cemetery. Many of these nineteenth-century buildings remain active parts of daily life, housing local cafes, neighborhood shops, saloons, and working county offices right alongside preserved artifacts from the gold rush era.

Living in Idaho City offers a quiet mountain lifestyle with immediate access to the Boise National Forest. Outdoor recreation is a major draw for residents, with miles of trails for hiking and dirt biking, mountain streams for fishing, winter snowmobiling routes, and nearby geothermal hot springs. While the town provides a peaceful, secluded setting in the woods, Highway 21 keeps the broader amenities, healthcare, and employment opportunities of Boise within a 45-minute drive.
