Idanha, OR

Tucked along the North Santiam River on Highway 22, Idanha is a quiet Cascade mountain community of around 200 residents. The town got its start in the 1890s as Muskrat Camp when railroad construction through the canyon stalled, leaving travelers with a place to rest. A local hotel owner eventually gave the town its current name, borrowing it from a popular brand of Idaho bottled mineral water.

Logging drove the local economy for decades, bringing mills, camps, and families into the river canyon. Today, life in Idanha centers on the outdoors and the slow pace of a small mountain community. The North Santiam River splits the town across Marion and Linn counties, bordered on all sides by the Willamette National Forest. Residents enjoy quick access to boating on Detroit Lake, skiing at Hoodoo, and local get-togethers like the annual Idanha Mountain Festival. It offers a peaceful setting for anyone drawn to fresh mountain air and easy access to the wilderness.
