Independence, LA

Independence is a quiet, close-knit town of around 1,600 residents in Tangipahoa Parish, located roughly an hour north of New Orleans and an hour east of Baton Rouge. First settled in the 1830s as a railroad stop under the unusual name Uncle Sam, the town grew into a peaceful farming community over the following century. Today, it offers a relaxed, small-town setting where neighbors look out for one another and the pace of everyday life stays pleasantly unhurried.

What gives Independence its unique personality is its deep Sicilian heritage. Beginning in the late 1800s, Italian families moved to the area to cultivate strawberry farms, establishing traditions that still shape the local food and culture.
