Independence, LA

At the 2010 census, Independence had 1,665 people in Tangipahoa Parish, a town whose older name was Uncle Sam. Gaston Raoul established the Southern Car Company to build railroad rolling stock, and the community began forming around the plant in 1837. After the Civil War, the car works moved to McComb, Mississippi, but the railroad connection helped leave Independence with a strong sense of place. State Representative Harry D. Wilson kept pushing for a town charter, which arrived in 1912; he later served as Louisiana’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry.

The deeper local story comes from strawberries and Sicily. Italian immigrants arrived in the 1890s to work in Tangipahoa Parish’s growing strawberry industry, then bought land and built families, businesses, churches, and food traditions around Independence. The 1908 Mater Delarosa Catholic Church now houses the Independence Italian Cultural Museum, where visitors can learn about the region’s Sicilian heritage. Every March, the Sicilian Festival brings that history out into the street with music, food, language, and a parade. Independence is a small Louisiana town with an unusually clear cultural recipe: railroad beginnings, strawberry fields, and a Sicilian community that still knows how to throw its own annual gathering.
