About Independence

Independence is a rural city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, situated twenty-four miles west of Minneapolis along U.S. Highway 12. Named after Lake Independence on its eastern boundary, the community of approximately 3,700 consists largely of agricultural land, wooded areas, and numerous lakes. Organized as a township in 1858 following the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux, the community was incorporated as a city in 1974 and is served by the Orono Public Schools.
