Inman Mills, SC

Inman Mills is the former textile complex at 240 Fourth Street in Inman, a brick industrial landmark that grew out of James A. Chapman's company. Founded in 1901, the mill began production in 1902, with a four-story main building, a taller central tower, smaller attached buildings, and a smokestack. For generations, spinning and weaving tied this block to Inman's place in Spartanburg County's textile economy. The plant's long life also tracks the industry's changes: the historic mill closed in 2001 after nearly a century of production, and the property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Today the old mill operates as Lofts at Inman Mills, a 159-unit apartment community built inside the restored structure. Original brick, timber, arched window bays, and high ceilings remain part of the building's daily appearance, giving residents a direct connection to the industrial shell. Chapman's company continues textile manufacturing at the Saybrook plant in Inman, along with plants in Enoree, so the Inman name still reaches into present-day fabric production. The place works as both a preserved mill and an occupied residential building, with its working past visible in the same walls that now hold homes.
