Interlochen, MI

Interlochen sits between Green Lake and Duck Lake in Grand Traverse County, a crossroads community whose identity is unusually tied to both public land and the arts. The area began as Pine Park, Michigan's first state park, and the lakeside setting drew summer visitors before the National Music Camp opened in 1928. That camp grew into Interlochen Center for the Arts, bringing students, teachers, musicians, dancers, and audiences from far beyond northern Michigan.

Interlochen State Park still holds the natural side of the place, with woods, water, campgrounds, and shoreline recreation, while the arts center keeps a year-round calendar of concerts, festivals, and study. The post office, local roads, small businesses, and nearby Green Lake Township services give the community its everyday scale. During a performance weekend, traffic and sound can make the crossroads feel international; on an ordinary morning, it is still a lakeside settlement where residents run errands, walk wooded roads, and share the same small network of places.
