Ipswich, SD

Ipswich is Edmunds County's seat, a James River city whose street plan began with the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railway in 1883. The railroad made Ipswich a county center almost immediately: the settlement was platted in October, the county seat moved there in November, and a first county public school followed in 1886. The line was abandoned in 1982, though U.S. 12 and the old Yellowstone Trail route still carry the town's transportation history across the prairie.

The memorial arch is Ipswich's most recognizable marker. Built after World War I, moved to Highway 12, destroyed by a storm, and rebuilt with stones gathered from around the country and beyond, it now sits in Ipswich Park. Downtown parks fill in the civic map: Bandshell and Library Park sit beside the Marcus P. Beebe Library, Tiger Park lies south of the former rail line, and Charlie's Park fronts Highway 12. County offices, the school, library, community fitness center, pool, and local agriculture keep Ipswich functioning as a small administrative center in Edmunds County.
