Iraan, TX

Iraan is a Pecos County city of 1,055 people at the 2020 census, built beside the oil country of far West Texas. Its name combines Ira and Ann Yates, the ranch owners whose land held the Yates Oil Field. The field was discovered in 1926, and the town grew quickly as companies built housing and basic infrastructure for workers. Big Lake Oil Company began that work before the operation passed through Plymouth Oil and the Ohio Oil Company. The oil field remains the defining historical fact in Iraan's development.

State Highway 349 and US 190 meet in town, while the Pecos River loops north and east around the city. Iraan-Sheffield Independent School District provides public education for local students, and the town's regional connections include Big Lake. Those roads, the river, and the oil field give Iraan a clear West Texas shape: a town formed by a major petroleum discovery, with civic life arranged along highways beside a looping desert river.
