Irene, SD

Tucked into southeastern South Dakota, Irene is a quiet town of about 400 people that uniquely straddles the borders of Clay, Turner, and Yankton counties. Known locally as the "Village in the Valley," the community sits along Highway 46, about twenty minutes west of Interstate 29. That spot gives residents a peaceful rural setting while keeping daily commutes, shopping, and dining within easy reach of Sioux Falls, Yankton, and Vermillion. Families here are part of the consolidated Irene-Wakonda School District, which offers small class sizes and strong community support for local students.

Community spirit runs deep, and the highlight of the summer is the annual Irene Rodeo at the end of June. The weekend draws crowds from across the region for bull riding, barrel racing, mutton busting, and booster-run concession stands. Outside of rodeo weekend, everyday life stays active through youth sports, 4-H clubs, local church events, and the American Legion. It is a down-to-earth, friendly place where neighbors know one another and life moves at an easygoing pace.
