Ireton, IA

Ireton was platted in 1882 and named for Henry Ireton, the English Revolutionary general who served under Oliver Cromwell. The Sioux County city grew with the railroad and the businesses that followed: its early main street included a jewelry store, furniture store, bakery, dentist, and two doctors. The 2020 census counted 590 residents. Indian Creek runs through the northern part of town toward the Big Sioux River, placing Ireton within the river landscape shared by communities across northwest Iowa.

School and town offices still give Ireton a clear local center. Ireton Elementary Center serves the youngest grades, the West Sioux Community School District covers the broader area, and Ireton Christian School offers kindergarten through eighth grade. The city office on Fourth Street handles municipal business, and the surrounding roads lead toward Hawarden, Chatsworth, and Sioux City-area services. Ireton's size makes those regional connections practical: the town retains a school, city government, and local history, while older commercial life has been folded into a larger school and service network. The creek, the school buildings, and the compact street grid keep the original railroad settlement legible.
