About Irondale

Irondale is a Birmingham suburb in Jefferson County, northeast of Homewood and Mountain Brook. It incorporated in 1887 and still carries a railroad-town flavor, reinforced by the annual Whistle-Stop Festival and the local affection for its train history. The city is served by Jefferson County schools and includes Shades Valley High School and several local campuses. Irondale is close to Birmingham's urban core, but it has its own older neighborhood scale and a quieter, workaday identity.
