Irrigon, OR

Irrigon is a Morrow County city on the south bank of the Columbia River, with US 730 running through it. The 2020 census counted 2,011 residents. The town was incorporated in 1957, but its river story reaches back much farther: Grande Ronde Landing once sat nearby, and the name Irrigon was coined in 1903 from "irrigation" and "Oregon." The Columbia, not just the highway, is the reason the place is here. Local history runs through the Lewis and Clark and Oregon Trail routes, which meet around the river corridor.

Irrigon Hatchery sits about three miles west, and Lake Umatilla now covers the island where Lewis and Clark camped near the present marina. Umatilla and I-84 are close for bigger trips, but Irrigon keeps a working-river feel with farms, fish, and long views east and west. The river light is hard to miss, especially near sunset. It is an eastern Oregon city named for irrigation, built beside the Columbia's moving water.
