Irvington, KY

Irvington is a Breckinridge County city that was born with a railroad timetable in mind. The post office first opened as Merino in 1885, then Bennett bought 315 acres and laid out a new community as the Louisville, St. Louis, and Texas Railroad approached. Railroad employees helped plat the town over the winter of 1888–89, giving Irvington a tidy explanation for its streets and its place in county history.

Railroad and coal-mining history still gives Irvington its strongest local flavor, but the town's present-day rhythm is more everyday: City Hall on Caroline Street, Irvington Elementary, and the Breckinridge County Public Library's branch on Main Street. The library serves as a practical stop for the city and surrounding farms, while the road through town points toward Hardinsburg and the wider county. Irvington is the kind of small Kentucky city where a railroad origin story survives in the street plan, and where the local library still gives the place a regular gathering point.
