Irwin, SC

Irwin is an unincorporated Lancaster County community on the western side of the county, with Cane Creek forming the northern edge and Rum Creek the southern one. The 2010 census counted 1,405 residents. Springdale is next door to the east, and Lancaster is about four miles northeast, so the local map reaches toward a county seat even though Irwin has no separate town government. The place is best known for its small mill houses, which give the community a recognizable physical shape among the roads and creek bottoms.

Those houses come from the years when Springs Industries was a major Lancaster County employer, operating from 1950 to 2002. Textile work gave Irwin a strong center of gravity, and the mill-home pattern still holds the history in view after that industry faded. Today, residents use Lancaster and Springdale for more of the larger civic, shopping, and school network, while Irwin remains a residential community framed by Cane Creek, Rum Creek, and the old mill-house streets. It is a good example of how a company town can outlast the company: the houses stay in place, the creeks still mark the edges, and the daily life keeps adjusting around an older industrial footprint.
