Island Pond, VT

Island Pond is the village center of Brighton, Vermont, set at the north end of a 600-acre lake with a 22-acre island. The community was once an isolated farming and lumber settlement, then changed sharply when the Grand Trunk Railway connected Montreal and Portland at Island Pond in 1853. A roundhouse, shops, hotels, and railroad businesses made the village a major midpoint on the international line, and the old rail story still appears in local markers, buildings, and town plans.

Brighton town offices remain in Island Pond, which also serves as the community's center for stores, services, history, and seasonal visitors. Fewer trains pass through now, but rail still matters to the town's background, while snowmobile trails, the lake, Bluff Mountain, the Clyde River, and nearby forest roads shape the outdoor calendar. The Island Pond Historical Society keeps older business and railroad memories in circulation, and the former railroad buildings have found later uses. Island Pond is a Northeast Kingdom village where a lakefront setting and an international rail junction continue to define the local map.
