Isola, MS

Isola is a Humphreys County town on the banks of Lake Dawson, an old river channel near the Mississippi Delta. The 2020 census counted 638 residents. The lake lies near the town’s northwest corner and runs toward Pawson Bayou and the Big Sunflower River, giving Isola a watery edge even though its daily connections are roads and schools. U.S. 49W passes on the east side, with Belzoni eight miles southeast and Indianola 15 miles north.

Humphreys County School District serves Isola, with children attending school in Belzoni. The town’s compact map sits between Sunflower County to the north and Belzoni, the Humphreys County seat, to the southeast. Belzoni and Indianola are not abstract points on the map; they are the places where school, county, and commercial routes pull Isola into the wider Delta. Isola feels like a small Delta settlement organized by an old channel: a town name on the highway, homes around the lake edge, and school and county services shared across the flat agricultural landscape.
