About Jamesville Colony

Jamesville Colony is a census-designated place and Hutterite colony in Yankton County, South Dakota. The 2020 Census counted 110 residents and no housing units in 271,374 square meters of land. A South Dakota State Register nomination identifies Jamesville as a Wolf Creek-group colony, with an older Jamesville site resettled as the present colony; historical research places the daughter colony along the James River in 1884. The colony's name describes a communal agricultural settlement, a form that differs from a conventional town plan.

Work and schooling are organized across the colony and the surrounding district. A South Dakota State University agricultural bulletin describes Hutterite colonies as communal farms with crop and livestock operations. Menno Public School says its K-12 enrollment includes students at the Jamesville and Maxwell colony schools, linking the colony's children to a district-level school system. A South Dakota History study of Hutterite education describes colony schools as an important part of cultural continuity. Jamesville's local life is visible through communal farming, colony schooling, and a rural setting along the James River.
