Janesville has a long history as a classic Midwestern manufacturing hub. For nearly a century, the General Motors assembly plant anchored the local economy, and the community has spent the years since its 2008 closure steadily rebuilding and diversifying. That heritage is visible across town in several historic districts filled with well-preserved nineteenth-century architecture. One standout is the Lincoln-Tallman House, where Abraham Lincoln stayed for a weekend in 1859. As the Rock County seat, Janesville also houses county government offices, courts, and regional institutions that keep the city center active year-round.

Housing prices in Janesville are generally much more approachable than in Madison or the Chicago suburbs, which draws plenty of first-time buyers and growing families. Neighborhoods offer a wide mix of styles, including historic Victorians near the center, mid-century ranch homes, and newer subdivision builds on the outer edges. Downtown Janesville has gained plenty of momentum in recent years, with local restaurants, taprooms, and coffee shops filling handsome brick storefronts along the river. Summer brings weekly crowds to the Marvin Roth Pavilion for the free Music at the Marv concert series, alongside regular farmers markets and the annual Tallman Arts Festival. You will definitely want a car for daily errands and commuting, and you will find an easygoing, grounded pace of life with strong community roots.
